Due to the structural limitations of the seismic brace frame, lightweight backfill alternatives were required in lieu of traditional soil backfill to limit the static and dynamic lateral pressures on the building. CEL provided geotechnical recommendations for the use of EPS Geofoam or low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) backfill on the project. The use of cellular concrete in particular proved significant cost savings over EPS Geofoam as well as reduced time and construction schedule. CEL provided alternate bearing capacity recommendations that were used to optimize over-excavation beneath footings. CEL also provided geotechnical design review of temporary shoring calculations, shop drawings, and specifications to ensure consistency with the geotechnical design recommendations for the project.
