The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Expansion project is a 521,300
square-foot addition to the existing children’s hospital. This addition
includes two below grade levels of parking, ground level consisting of
the Main Entrance and Emerald Garden with the remaining six levels
consisting of 150 new patient beds, extensive surgical and diagnostic
services and recovery and support functions.
The project also includes the addition of 3.5 acres of outdoor areas and
gardens which help provide a park-like setting for patients, families and
visitors. In addition, the family waiting areas are designed with tree
house-like views overlooking the gardens below.
The foundation sits on 2,500 auger cast piles which supports nine
stories of structural steel with sideplates and buckling restrained braces.
All levels are concrete metal decks which are penetrated with eight staff
elevators, four main public elevators, two parking elevators, one kitchen
elevator and two surgery elevators.
CEL’s scope of services includes soils compaction testing, sampling
of grout for auger cast piles, reinforcing steel sampling, tagging and
testing, reinforcing steel inspections, batch plant inspection, concrete
placement and sampling inspections, concrete compression testing,
structural and miscellaneous steel shop fabrication and field welding,
shop welding inspection of buckling restrained braces, ultrasonic and
magnetic particle testing of welds, fireproofing inspection, adhesion
and cohesion testing of fireproofing, fireproofing density testing and
torque testing of post-installed anchors.
